From a Google Cloud Event in London to Local Pitch: How a Full Cricket Setup Found a New Home in Surrey

Working alongside Event Cycle and Wonder, Google Cloud looked at a highly specialised, top-tier demo kit sitting in their inventory that was no longer required: a professional-grade cricket cage with double doors, a high-performance bowling machine, and 33 square metres of heavy-duty astroturf rolls specifically cut for a batting cage.
Instead of letting this premium sports setup collect dust or face disposal, Google Cloud worked with Wonder, to pitch it directly into the heart of a local community.
Hitting a Six for Surrey Sports
The entire cricket inventory from the Google Cloud Summit London was matched and donated directly to the Mytchett Community Association in Surrey.
Run from The Mytchett Centre, the association is a vital local lifeline. It acts as a dedicated warm space in the winter, hosts a bustling local food bank, and provides rooms, fields, a playground, and stages for dozens of local clubs. Among those groups is the local cricket club, alongside hundreds of ad-hoc young athletes and community users who use the surrounding sports fields every week.
Before this donation, setting up a fully enclosed, professional-spec practice net with automated bowling capabilities was a distant financial hurdle for a grassroots community hub.
A New Lease on Life
On July 8, 2026, the transport arrived in Surrey. The full 35ft x 10ft x 10ft cricket cage, the bowling machine, and the multi-roll astroturf were officially handed over to the association.
By passing these assets directly to a grassroots sports space, Google Cloud and Wonder didn't just successfully clear out event inventory; they directly lowered the barrier to entry for local sports. Now, young players, casual weekend athletes, and the local cricket club can train using the exact same high-caliber equipment usually reserved for major corporate brand experiences.
It shows that when brands and agencies apply "people-first" design to their sustainability strategies, the positive impact can land right on the community pitch.
